Born in 1905 on Manhattan's Lower East Side to Russian immigrant parents, Gladys went to work as a bookkeeper for a real estate developer while still in high school — and it quickly became clear that numbers, people, and property were where her real talent was.
After raising two children as a single mother in the 1940s, Gladys became a real estate salesperson — one of the few paths open to working women at the time. Every day she walked from her apartment on West 93rd Street to her office on West 72nd, introducing herself to every building superintendent along the way and quietly asking to be the first call when an apartment opened up. It worked. Her business grew referral by referral until she bought out the firm she worked for and founded Gotham Realty from a second-floor office at 57th and 6th in 1944.
Her office's proximity to Broadway led Gladys into a specialty helping theater people find housing between productions — a client list that eventually included Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Whoever the client, Gladys treated them with the same discretion, respect, and quiet persistence.
What set Gladys apart wasn't aggression — it was diplomacy. In an era when women who succeeded in business were often expected to be tough and combative, Gladys was known instead for her kindness, patience, and sharp instincts. She worked out of her office at 667 Madison Avenue for nearly 20 years, and kept working — well into her 90s — until she was 93 years old.
She remains the inspiration and heart of Gotham Realty today.
